Establishing Espoir Tai

What is the situation in Tai concerning national and international aid organisations and founding?

The Tai National Park is totally consisting of 454.000ha primary forest and remains one of the last tropical rainforest in Côte d'Ivoire and all West Africa. In times of extensive logging and agriculture the Tai National Park provides a reserve for endangered plants and animals species e.g. the pygmy hippopotamus, leopards, chimpanzees and elephants. The unique flora and fauna is the reason for national and international research on topics of botanic, zoology, wild animal veterinary and wild life conservation.
The research projects are working together with local employees, some do so for about 30 years now. The  assistents are coming from the villages close to the park boarder.

International orgnaisations like the Deutsche Gesellschaft für technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ), the Kreditinstitut für Wiederaufbau (KFW) and the Wild Chimpanzee Foundation (WCF) are working together with national partners like Eau et Forêt and OIPR to save this unique forest.

Why was the foundation of Espoir Tai necessary?

The national and international efforts in development are concentrated on conservation of the special flora and fauna in the Tai National Park. Comparable endeavors in the field of health care are missing while the national health care system in Tai is low developed.
Espoir Tai tackls the first steps towards a sustainable development in health care and health education in the rural area of Tai city at the western border of Tai National Park.

What influenced the foundation of Espoir Tai?

In September 2005 the Centre Suisse de Recherches Scientifiques en Côte d'Ivoire (CSRS) started a campaign fighting HIV/Aids among its employees. « La Cellule Focale de Lutte Contre VIH/SIDA » monthly provides condoms and general education materials. The students working in Tai National Park had been asked to take over the challenge to fight HIV/Aids by talking to their assistents. The PhD students Nadin Eckhardt and Karim Ouattara followed the demand. Since December 2005 regularly talks (one-by-one or in groups) and distribution of condoms take place.

When was Espoir Tai founded?

In the begining of 2006 a private initiative of Nadin Eckhardt and the local employee Camille Bolé started by talking about HIV/Aids to young people and disposing condoms in the village of Ponan.
After more than one year of education campaigns in the villages the project Espoir Tai was official founded in June 2007.
